Top 5 things to do in Jaisalmer

JAISALMER: The Golden City of Rajasthan

Jaisalmer is genuinely a ‘land of wonders’; its exuberant past, culture, nature, and heritage give us a lot to explore. Fondly known as ‘The Golden City of India,’ Jaisalmer is a dynamic city in the heart of the Thar Desert. It is a home to some of the best living forts where you can experience royalty. The town is built in beautiful yellow sandstone and is still authentic and less influenced by tourism.

Jaisalmer Fort

Built-in 1156 by King Rawal Jaisal, Jaisalmer Fort dominates the countryside in the far northwestern corner of Rajasthan, near the border of India and Pakistan. The magnificent complex, also known as Sonar Kila ("Golden Fort"), stands a mighty yellow sandstone structure called the Jaisalmer Fort or the Golden Fort. It is one of those ancient forts where people still live and livelihood. The fort never fails to amaze travelers as it has the ambiance that takes people back in the bygone era. It shines bright and sublime during a moonlit night. The pond has many species of fish that priests and devotees feed. The fort also houses Havelis, including the Patwaon Ki Haveli, Nathmal Ki Haveli, Salim Singh Ki Haweli, and Saalam Singh Ki Haveli.

Sam Sand Dunes

Sam dunes is one of India's most authentic desert dune sites, where you will find 30-60-meter-tall dunes, and many travelers enjoy Desert Safari on camels or jeep. Sam is 45 km west of Jaisalmer city, where you can reach by hiring a can from Jaisalmer city and then stay in one of many desert camps, built-in 2-3 km radius of dunes. The best time to reach Sam dunes is around evening for the spectacular sunsets at around 4–7 pm or early morning, during sunrise from 4 to 6 am. You can book a camel or jeep (available at desert camps) to reach the sunset point, which is 20-30 minutes from the campsite.

Bada Bagh

Bada Bagh might surprise you with its greenery in the arid desert landscape of Jaisalmer. This was, in fact, the very idea when it was built back in the 16th century – to create a beautiful green oasis in the desert region. Wonderfully sculpted cenotaphs and chhatris of former rulers are the unique attraction of Bada Bagh. Pay special attention to carved pillars, beautifully sculpted chhatris, inscriptions, and the architecture of Bada Bagh. Also, watch out for sunsets here, as they are most breathtaking, and visit the Jait Sar Tank, a water reservoir, and Jait Bandh, a dam. Bada Bagh is enveloped in serene calm and tranquillity. Evenings are best to visit this beautiful site. Take your cameras and camcorders along, as the place is exceptionally scenic and photogenic and will give you many photo opportunities.

Gadsisar Lake

Gadsisar Lake was built as a water reservoir way back in the 14th century by the founding Rajput ruler of Jaisalmer, Rawal Jaisal, but today, it is not used as one. Today Gadsisar Lake is the most attractive tourist hotspot in Jaisalmer. The entrance of Gadsisar Lake is Tilon ki Pol. This magnificent arched gateway is yellow sandstone and has intricately carved windows and chhatris. It also has a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. There are chhatris, ghats, and temples bordering Gadsisar Lake, which makes it perfect for scenic landscape photography, and boating out there is a serene experience. You can also feed the catfish in the waters of the lake. In addition, you can visit the Folklore Museum and Desert Cultural Centre that is situated quite close to the lake. There, you can enjoy the puppet show in the museum and various exhibits like coins, musical instruments, textiles, old utensils, rare manuscripts, and other artifacts relating to the folk history of Rajasthan.

Safari

Take a Camel Safari/Jeep Safari to the dunes- No visit to Jaisalmer is complete without a trip to the Thar desert dunes, and a safari is, without doubt, the best way to see it! The safaris offer an overnight experience with food, folk dance transportation, and stay at the dunes.
